Great moisturizer but the self-tanning didn't work for me

I have olive skin that tans easily, so I’m always on the lookout for effective self-tanning products. Previously, I was using Bioderma's Photoderm Autobronzant, which I found to be incredibly easy to use—just spray it on and you’re done. However, I wanted to try something new, so I decided to give Recipe for Men's Self-Tanning Gel a shot, based on the glowing 5-star reviews on their website. I was particularly influenced by the fact that two of the reviews were from men in Greece, who likely have a similar skin type to mine.

After a month of using the product, I have mixed feelings. On the positive side, I appreciate that it’s a clear gel, so it doesn’t leave any visible colour marks on the skin immediately after application. It also does a nice job of moisturizing, which is a great bonus.

However, as a self-tanning product, I don’t find it to be as effective as the Bioderma product I was using before. To be fair, I apply the gel to my face and neck, both of which get shaved daily, and this might affect how well the colour builds. Still, unlike Bioderma's product, I didn’t notice my skin turning darker a few hours after use, which was a bit disappointing.

Both products share ingredients like glycerine, dihydroxyacetone, and xylitol rhamnose, but for me, Recipe for Men’s gel just doesn’t deliver enough colour to make it worth repurchasing. The results might be different on areas of the body that aren’t shaved, but since I’m specifically looking for an autobronzer that works…

A natural-looking tan on your face without the sun damage, the spray booth, or the orange hands. The Recipe for Men Self Tanning Face Gel uses Dihydroxyacetone (DHA) - the gold standard active in self-tanning - to gradually develop a realistic, skin-toned bronze on the face that builds with each application. The lightweight gel formula absorbs quickly and dries clean, with no sticky residue and no transfer. The Xylitol Complex keeps skin hydrated throughout the tanning process so the colour develops evenly, and Glycerin ensures skin feels comfortable rather than dry as the tan builds. Start light, build gradually, and the result is a tan that looks like it came from actually being outside. 100% vegan, produced in Sweden.

The Self Tanning Face Gel is for anyone who wants a healthier-looking complexion without UV exposure - whether that's year-round maintenance, pre-event colour, or a way to look less washed out in winter. The gradual-build formula makes it particularly approachable for self-tanning beginners, since you control exactly how much colour you develop and can build slowly to find your level. Also a smart choice for those who use SPF religiously and want the look of sun-kissed skin without compromising on sun protection.

  • Builds a natural-looking tan gradually - DHA reacts with amino acids in the skin's outer layer to develop colour progressively with each application, giving you full control over the depth of tan you want to achieve
  • Lightweight gel absorbs fast - the gel texture sinks in quickly with no stickiness, no heavy feel, and no white cast, making it easy to apply before moisturizer or as a standalone step
  • Keeps skin hydrated as it tans - the Xylitol Complex and Glycerin maintain skin moisture throughout the tanning process, supporting an even colour development and preventing the patchiness that dry skin can cause
  • No orange tone - DHA at a face-appropriate concentration develops a warm, skin-toned bronze rather than the orange result associated with older or lower-quality self-tanners
  • Gradual build means full control - use every other day to build to your desired depth, then maintain with once or twice weekly applications. No commitment to a single dramatic result
  • Works well alongside the Energizing Bronze Cream - use the Self Tanning Face Gel for gradual base colour and the Bronze Cream over the top for an enhanced, immediate finish on days you want more
  • 100% vegan - produced in Sweden with no parabens
  • Dihydroxyacetone (DHA) - the active ingredient in virtually all self-tanning products and the gold standard for sunless tanning. A naturally derived sugar compound that reacts with the amino acids in the skin's outermost layer (the stratum corneum) to produce a brown pigment called melanoidin - the same mechanism that gives skin a tanned appearance. The colour develops gradually over 4-8 hours and lasts as the skin naturally sheds
  • Xylitol Complex (Xylitylglucoside, Anhydroxylitol, Xylitol) - a plant-derived moisture-binding complex that keeps skin hydrated throughout the tanning process, supporting even colour development and preventing the dry, patchy result that occurs when skin is dehydrated during DHA application
  • Glycerin - a foundational humectant that draws moisture into the skin and keeps it comfortable during and after the self-tanning process, contributing to a smoother, more even tan finish
  • Sodium Metabisulfite - an antioxidant stabilizer that protects the DHA molecule from oxidation and degradation, maintaining the effectiveness and colour quality of the formula throughout the product's shelf life

Start with clean, exfoliated skin - using the Recipe for Men Facial Scrub 24 hours before your first application will help the tan develop more evenly. Apply a small amount of the Self Tanning Face Gel evenly across the face and neck, blending well at the hairline, eyebrows, and jaw to avoid lines. Wash hands immediately after application. Allow to dry fully before applying any other products. The tan will begin to develop within 2-4 hours and reach full colour in 8 hours. Use every other day to build to your desired depth, then maintain with 1-2 applications per week. Avoid applying immediately before sweating or washing the face to allow the DHA time to fully react with the skin.

Note: as with all DHA-based self-tanners, some users may notice a faint scent during development - this is a normal characteristic of DHA and typically fades within a few hours of full development.

Self-tanning products have earned a complicated reputation - mostly because of orange tones, streaky finishes, and the smell. The Recipe for Men Self Tanning Face Gel addresses all three. The face-specific DHA concentration develops a genuinely warm, natural-looking tone rather than an orange one. The gel format applies evenly and dries cleanly without the drag of a lotion. And the Xylitol Complex - which we see throughout the Recipe for Men range - does genuine work here by keeping skin hydrated so the colour develops smoothly. Pair it with the Facial Scrub before application and the Energizing Bronze Cream on top when you want more, and you have a complete approach to healthy-looking colour that doesn't rely on UV damage to get there.
