The Barber Pole. It earned the nickname the same way most classics do - by being exactly what it looks like.

The 38C is the long-handled, heavy-weight member of the Merkur family. The ribbed handle was designed in the style of a barber pole - functional first, the grip pattern keeping control through wet hands and lather - but it looks the part too. A razor that belongs on the counter, not hidden in a drawer.

Brass handle, die-cast zinc head, bright chrome finish throughout. The generous blade gap flows soap freely and resists clogging. Two-piece construction. Made in Solingen, Germany.

Shavers who prefer a longer handle for control - particularly useful for shaving the neck and jaw where a shorter handle limits the wrist angle - and anyone who shaves their head or body where the extra reach genuinely matters. Also a strong choice for shavers with larger hands who find the 34C's shorter profile restrictive. Experienced enough for daily use by anyone who knows their way around a DE razor.

  • Long, ribbed barber pole handle - designed for grip security in wet hands and full wrist control through every stroke
  • Heavy brass handle provides natural weight for a smooth, low-pressure glide
  • Two-piece construction - blade loads easily, fewer parts than a three-piece
  • Closed comb safety bar - the all-rounder setting for classic wet shaving
  • Generous blade gap allows high soap flow and resists clogging
  • Bright chrome finish on brass handle and die-cast zinc head
  • Compatible with all standard double edge blades
  • Made in Solingen, Germany
  • Unscrew the handle to separate the head - place a DE blade across the base plate, replace the top cap, and screw the handle back on until snug
  • Wet the face and apply shaving cream or lather with a brush
  • Hold at roughly 30 degrees to the skin - the longer handle gives more leverage for wrist adjustments through the jawline and neck
  • Short, light strokes with the grain - let the weight do the work
  • Rinse the head frequently between strokes
  • Unscrew and rinse after each use - air dry before storing

The 38C is for shavers who have already worked out that handle length matters. The barber pole grip pattern is a genuine functional feature - it doesn't slip, and it gives you enough surface area to hold with confidence through the parts of the face that require the most wrist movement. For anyone who head shaves or finds shorter razors limit their reach on the neck, the 38C is the natural upgrade within the Merkur line.
