BASIC SKINCARE ROUTINE (AM)
- Cleanse - clears the sweat, oil, and pillow grime that built up overnight so everything after this actually works.
- Moisturize - keeps your skin barrier doing its job. Dry skin isn't tougher, it's just irritated.
- SPF - the single best anti-aging step that exists. Skip everything else before you skip this.
NIGHT TIME ROUTINE
- Cleanse - the day's buildup (sunscreen, oil, city grime) needs to come off before bed, or it just sits on your face for eight hours.
- Exfoliate (2-3x/week) - clears dead skin so your other products can actually absorb instead of sitting on top.
- Treatment (if you use one - retinol, etc.) - nighttime is when skin repairs itself, so this is when active ingredients do their best work.
- Night moisturizer - richer than your daytime one, built to support repair while you sleep instead of layering under SPF.
SHAVING ROUTINE
- Prep with warm water - softens the hair and opens things up for a closer shave with less irritation.
- Shave cream or gel - creates a cushion between blade and skin so you're cutting hair, not skin.
- Shave with the grain - fewer nicks, less irritation, way fewer ingrown hairs than fighting against it. Rinse with cool water - closes things back up and calms everything down. 5. Post-shave balm - soothes and hydrates without the sting of old-school aftershave. Look for alcohol-free.
BEARD CARE ROUTINE
- Beard wash (2-3x/week, not regular shampoo) - regular shampoo strips the natural oils your beard and skin underneath actually need.
- Beard oil (daily) - conditions the hair and the skin underneath it. Skip this and you're looking at itch and beardruff.
- Beard balm (if you're shaping or taming) - light hold while still conditioning, good for keeping flyaways in check.
- Comb or brush - trains the direction of growth and spreads oil evenly instead of leaving it in one spot.
- Trim regularly - keeps the shape intact and gets rid of split ends before they show.
BODY CARE ROUTINE
- Exfoliate (1-2x/week) - stops ingrown hairs before they start and helps your body wash actually do something.
- Body wash - cleans without stripping your skin the way bar soap tends to.
- Moisturize right after the shower - your skin is still damp, which is the best time to lock moisture in. Matters even more once the fall air dries things out.
- Deodorant/antiperspirant - obvious, but freshly showered skin is when it works best.
HAIR CARE ROUTINE
- Shampoo (2-4x/week, not necessarily daily) - washing every day strips the natural oils that keep your hair and scalp healthy.
- Conditioner (every wash) - puts moisture back in, makes hair easier to manage and style.
- Scalp care (occasional scrub or serum) - a healthy scalp is the actual foundation for healthy hair. Skip it and you're building on a shaky base.
- Towel dry gently - rubbing causes frizz and breakage. Pat it, don't wring it.
HAIR GROWTH ROUTINE
(For guys actively working on thickness or growth - not required for everyone.)
- Scalp stimulation - massage or a derma roller increases blood flow to the follicles, which is where growth actually starts.
- Growth treatment or serum - targets the follicles directly to support thicker, healthier growth over time.
- Consistency over 3-6 months - hair grows slowly. One good week won't show results. Showing up for months will.
- Diet and supplements - growth isn't only topical. Protein and biotin intake matter too.
HAIR STYLE ROUTINE
- Start with damp (not soaking, not bone-dry) hair - product works best in that in-between zone.
- Pick the right product for your hold and finish - paste, pomade, or clay all do different jobs. Matching the product to your hair type and the look you want is half the battle.
- Work it through evenly before styling - even distribution means no clumps and a smoother finish.
- Finish with the details - a comb or a bit of texturizing at the end refines the shape without overworking it.
That's the full menu. Pick what's missing from yours, ignore what isn't, and head into fall with a routine that's actually working for you instead of just happening to you.
