HOW TO STICK TO A ROUTINE
Habit...By Bit
Creating new habits, rituals, and routines for anything can often be a struggle at first. One book that is extremely helpful in wrapping your mind around successfully sticking to new habits is Atomic Habits by James Clear. "Tiny Changes. Remarkable Results" is the slogan for the book and it is totally accurate.
Sticking to a skincare and grooming routine can yield significant benefits for your overall appearance and confidence. Well you look and feel good, you go about your day differently and or in a much better space to tackle the rest of your goals and daily objectives. Here are some tips to help you maintain consistency:
1. Keep it Simple:
Start with a basic routine that includes cleansing, moisturizing, and sun protection. Keeping it simple increases the likelihood that you'll stick to it.
2. Choose Products Wisely:
Select products that suit your skin type and concerns. Using the right products makes the routine more effective and enjoyable.
3. Establish a Routine:
Create a daily routine that fits into your schedule. Set specific times for your skincare and grooming activities to make them habitual.
4. Start Gradually:
If you're new to skincare, start with a few essential products and gradually introduce additional ones. This prevents overwhelming yourself and allows your skin to adjust.
5. Visible Reminder:
Place your skincare products in a visible spot as a visual cue to complete your routine. This could be by the bathroom sink or on your dresser.
6. Tie it to Existing Habits:
Link your skincare routine to existing habits, like brushing your teeth. This helps incorporate it seamlessly into your day. This is otherwise know as "Habit Stacking."
7. Morning and Evening Routines:
Establish both a morning and evening routine. Morning routines prepare your skin for the day, while evening routines cleanse and rejuvenate your skin.
8. Set Reminders:
Use alarms, calendar alerts, or smartphone reminders to prompt you to complete your routine.
9. Reward Yourself:
Treat yourself to small rewards for sticking to your routine consistently. This could be as simple as enjoying a favourite snack or watching a short video after completing your routine.
10. Track Progress:
Take photos of your skin before starting your routine and periodically thereafter. Seeing improvements can motivate you to continue.
11. Stay Flexible:
While consistency is key, don't stress if you miss a day or two occasionally. Just get back on track the next day.
12. Invest in Quality Products:
Investing in quality skincare and grooming products can make the routine more enjoyable. When you see positive results, it becomes easier to stick to the routine.
13. Share with Others:
Tell a friend or family member about your routine. Having someone to share your progress with can provide accountability.
14. Educate Yourself:
Learn about the benefits of each step in your routine. Understanding why you're doing each step can make you more committed to the process.
15. Visualize the Benefits:
Imagine how your skin and appearance will improve with consistent care. Visualizing the results can be motivating.
As with most things, consistency is also key when it comes to skincare and grooming. Over time, your routine will become a natural part of your day, and the benefits will become evident.
